Time to shift to the second gear... Not grabbing the knob as like when shifting into first, I place my palm on the top of the knob and relax the fingers so they curl down in front of the knob. Slight pull and the gear is fixed in second. Wow, the weight of the knob does it for you! Just keep "stepping on it".
Third gear... Just twist the wrist a little so the palm's heel is pushing the knob forward. It agreeably jumps out of the second, positions in front of the third and, by continuing the same smooth pushing motion you slide it into the third without even thinking of it. That's becoming addictive - to keep the palm on the knob, feels so right. But I reluctantly remove the hand from the shifter and grab the wheel. Besides, I need to rest my left arm on the rolled down window and without the right hand on the wheel I run out of hands.
Fourth... Well, actually, a little before that... The hand is back on the knob, fingers outstretched so they "caress" the aluminum toy "head" all the way down to the "shaft". All I need to do is to pull it to shift into the fourth... Hey, what's that? The lower part of the knob, where it connects with the "neck", is wider in diameter than the neck so the edge is pretty noticeable for the touch.
If I may say so, adjusting the difference between knob's lower and neck's upper diameters would greatly help - either cut the knob a little or use some duct tape to smooth the edge. Now, back to shifting... What shifting? Your hand already did that when the time came and you didn't even notice that? Inertia of the knob does the job for you. Smooth and perfect...
Fifth... Here comes yet another great improvement - you just push it forward and to the right, and it shifts in one quick, swift motion, you don't need to zig-zag the knob like you often had to do with the lightweight OEM prick. And shape helps a lot - just use the palm's heel and "push, baby, push!!!".
Sixth... Well, if you big enough to drive that fast that you need the sixth gear, then you already know how to shift to it. But hey, with this heavy-duty-heavy-weight it's better - just twist your wrist again so you touch the knob from top-left-forward, fingers wrapped around the knob (touching it, not grabbing) and just move it in a straight line by pulling back and pushing to the right. One smooth motion. Like a dream. |
